Visiting National Park Service sites (there are over 400!) are one of our favorite activities in a new spot and we really enjoyed our recent to the area. The Visitor Centers are free to visit, as are many ranger led programs and activities, and showcase the history of the Cape, beginning with the English pilgrims who arrived at Provincetown on the Mayflower in November of 1620. Overseen by the National Park Service and established in 1961, the National Seashore encompasses 40 miles of beach, 12 self guided hiking trails, six public beaches (Coast Guard, Nauset Light, Marconi, Head of the Meadow, Race Point, and Herring Cove), 6 lighthouses, three biking trails, fishing and hunting, and two Visitor Centers (Province Lands and Salt Marsh). The 43,608 acres of the Seashore are spread out across six towns and on both the Cape Cod Bay and Atlantic Ocean sides of Cape Cod, the “flexed arm” of Massachusetts. If it’s a countertop wire cutter, a guillotine-like motion will slice the cheese. How do you slice cheese with a cheese slicer? A dedicated cheese slicer is ideally suited to the task for which it was named. Professional chefs will definitely use the best tool for the job. Do professional chefs use cheese slicers? If you still have lingering questions regarding your cheese slicers, below are answers to some of the most commonly asked questions. Ideal for hard and semi-hard cheeses, this dishwasher-safe design does not work well with soft cheeses like Brie, Camembert, or Roquefort. The shovel-style head containing the blade is easy on the wrist, as most of the force you exert is pulling as opposed to pressing. This lightweight design has been used for decades, and BOSKA engineered the handle for ergonomic comfort. The blade on this premium cheese slicer is made out of a single piece of high-quality stainless steel. Here are our top picks for some of the best cheese slicers for hosts to create their next party tray. Using the factors listed above, we selected several effective, well-built cheese slicers. Now that you know more about cheese slicers, it’s time to start shopping. Wire blades on cheese cutters are generally safer because they are less likely to cut through meats or harder foods. More caution is needed with a straight-edge blade than a wire blade. Cut away from your body, and keep the blades sharp. Using a cheese slicer requires the same level of caution as using any standard kitchen knife. Base/block-style slicers can cut hard, semihard, semisoft, or soft cheeses with equal success. Handheld-style cheese slicers are more suited for hard or semihard cheeses. Wire blades don’t usually have the strength to cut through meats like salami or harder foods like nuts. If a base/block model uses a hard-edge blade instead of a wire blade to cut, then there are more options for the types of food they can process. Base/block models fine-slice foods like sausages, peppers, lettuce, cucumbers, and radishes. VersatilityĬheese slicers also can be used for cutting other foods. Pie-serving-style handheld slicers cannot adjust thickness, but you could layer the slices to increase the thickness. Some wire-bladed handheld models have adjustable rollers that can vary the thickness of cuts. While you can cut a 2-inch-thick piece of cheddar with the base/block model, cheese slicers are better suited for thinner slices. There is more room for flexibility in thickness when cutting with a base/block-style cheese slicer, because you can move as much or as little of the cheese block under the wire or blade as you like. Keep in mind that these models take up more storage space. It’s generally easier to slice cheeses using a base/block slicer. When it comes to cutting cheese, most of the work is done by the blade, if it’s sharp enough. Ergonomic handles also can mitigate wrist and grip strain.īase/block models have large handles that allow you to put pressure on the blade without straining. A strong handle helps with steady and constant pressure during cutting, and the shape or contour can reduce strain. If you had a large amount of cheese to cut, your wrist and hand take the brunt of the stress. ComfortĬomfort is important when it comes to handheld cheese slicers. Plastic handles, some featuring a silicone sleeve, are also common for comfort and ergonomics. The bodies of handheld models are usually constructed of lighter, more durable materials like zinc alloy. The variety has more to do with personal preference, as some prefer the natural look of wood, others prefer nonporous steel, and some choose plastic cutting surfaces. Functionally, these materials are similar. The base portion of these models are made from various materials like metal, wood, plastic. It’s also tough enough to cut through harder cheeses that have a moisture content of less than 50 percent, like Romano and Parmesan. Steel is one of the few metals that can be considered food grade. Stainless steel is the most common material used for blades and cutting wires. Some cheese slicers of this type can actually function as a serving board. These apply a guillotine-like cutting motion with a wire or steel blade. Operating a tool like this means drawing the blade or wire across the top of the cheese to create a shaving.īase, also known as block, models are designed for use on a countertop or tabletop. The other handheld design features a shaving blade inserted in the middle of a shovel-style head. For some models, the tension on the wire can be adjusted. One type is a slingshot, or Y-shaped, model that slices cheeses with a taut wire stretched parallel to the blade. If you’re trying to figure out which style is best for your needs and budget, read on. There are different forms and styles of cheese slicers, and some can cut foods other than cheese. Photo: What to Consider When Choosing the Best Cheese Slicer But the study also revealed these isolated groups were more likely to produce abnormally striped zebras, suggesting these genetic mutations are caused by their poor genetic diversity. Their study, published recently in the journal Molecular Ecology, found that smaller, more isolated populations of zebras had lower genetic diversity-not a surprise. To find out, Larison and colleagues ran genetic analyses on 140 individual plains zebras-including seven animals with unusual coat patterns-from nine locations in Africa, including Nambia’s Etosha National Park and South Africa’s Kruger National Park. ( Read more about Larison’s research in her own words.) “The observation led me to wonder: Is part of the reason that I’m seeing so many is because this population is inbred?” says Larison, who studies the evolution of zebra stripes at the University of California, Los Angeles. A lack of gene flow can lead to inbreeding and ultimately infertility, disease, and other genetic defects. Migrating infuses populations with new genes, making it key to a species’ long-term survival. Habitat fragmentation caused by fences, roads, and human development have squeezed zebra populations, like the one in Lake Mburu, into small pockets of land, preventing some of the animals from migrating between herds. Though plains zebras are the least threatened of the three species, their numbers have dropped by 25 percent since 2002, with around 500,000 animals ranging from Ethiopia to South Africa. So biologist Brenda Larison found it striking that an unusually high number-an estimated 5 percent-of plains zebra living near Uganda’s Lake Mburo were abnormally striped. Such aberrations-often caused by genetic mutations that alter the production of melanin, a natural pigment-are generally rare among mammals. In 2019 in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve, scientists recorded a polka-dotted foal, with white spots covering its dark-brown body. But in some cases, these African equines sport unusual color patterns, such as large, black splotches or golden coats with light-colored stripes. Anyone can tell you that zebras have distinctive black and white stripes. It is very important to leave these tabs unharassed and undamaged as doing so may compromise the performance of your device. Please note that some devices have small metallic tabs for battery retention and function. Now that you have determined the positive and negative ends of the battery, you can easily align it with corresponding markings on your device. On the opposite side, a small circular protrusion should be visible. On a typical Alkaline LR44 battery, the flat side (possibly with markings) will usually be the positive side. One of the most common questions about LR44's is "are lr44 batteries the same as 357?". Long story short, the 357 battery is simaler to the LR44 but not exactly the same when it comes to cost or performance. These batteries may not work in all applications that require a LR44 battery.įirst identify the positive and negative ends of the battery. Although these batteries are of the exact same dimensions as an LR44 battery, the silver oxide chemistry offers a very low drain performance allowing the battery to work over extended periods of time in low use applications such as in a watch. Examples of these could be the 303, SR44, SR44SW, and 357 silver oxide batteries. There are also some batteries that are the same size and dimensions as the LR44 battery, but are not exact equivalents or direct replacements as they are constructed of different chemistries offering different performances for varying applications. These batteries are exact equivalents for the LR44 battery, the only difference being the name. Direct replacements for LR44 would be Duracell 76A, Energizer A76, and AG13 batteries. The LR44 battery is also widely produced by smaller companies and private label battery manufacturers, for example Tianqiu produces the LR44.ĭepending on the manufacturer, batteries of the same size and capability of LR44, are referred to in a few different variations. Problems with Codebreaker Crossbowįilling this crossbow with some old elite (non-rebelle) darts, together with some off-brand suction/clip system darts may not work. During this action barrel mechanism will rotate. After loading the foam darts right into the front-loading barrel, prime the slide backward and forward to set the crossbow and fire to launch all 8 darts straight without refilling. It is convenient that you could slot in 4 darts at once from the opening before turning the barrel to fill the rest of the darts. The Nerf Rebelle Codebreaker Crossbow has a revolving barrel that holds 8 darts. This blaster also has a tactical rail that you could add on accessories like scope but this serves more aesthetically to make it cooler rather than improving the performance. There is likewise an alternative on the crossbow to place in a special code so only the person that recognizes the code can utilize the crossbow. Just one dart has a message on it, that dart is speckled with red dots, so you know which one to decode. The CODEBREAKER Crossbow includes one “Secret Message” dart, 7 darts, as well as a different decoder. This eight dart front load capacity crossbow features passcode protection that girls could be set-up for added spy security, making sure just the user or trusted allies can release its power. Also, since the Codebreaker is a pump-action crossbow, and unlike its stock and handle, the pump grip is well sized and quite easy to grip. Remarkably, the Codebreaker really feels extremely thin and light. In terms of design one huge setback is they left one side empty, which is fairly disappointing, particularly as the Rebelle styling tends to not have any engraved details. This color combination truly works well for this crossbow blaster rather than painting these guns pink and placing them in pretty packaging. Visually the Codebreaker is a fascinating blaster, with the normal streamlined Rebelle design of purple and grey. Every one of these products quickly clip into each other with a resounding click! It is simple setting up of this crossbow done within a couple of minutes, seconds even if you are familiar with Nerf or similar products. You have 3 parts you need to assemble the bow front, the string, and the shoulder rest. The Nerf Rebelle Codebreaker Crossbow Blaster is really easy to put together. This was perfect with the rise of pop-culture heroines like Katniss Everdeen and Princess Meridas as it was an instant hit till today.ĭesign and Layout of the Rebelle Codebreaker Hasbro spent more than 3 years finding out what young girls could desire in a blaster by asking this targeted segment themselves. The Nerf Rebelle Codebreaker Crossbow is an awesome and also special design, one of the many cool models since the birth of Nerf Rebelle product line in 2013. They eject from the barrel one by one–unless you use a little pump action and slam fire the crossbow, in which case darts will fire more rapidly.5 Facts About Nerf Rebelle Codebreaker Crossbow Darts load into a rotating barrel at the front of the crossbow and can fly up to 75 feet. Once the crossbow’s arms are pulled back, the trigger is primed to fire. Unlike the Nerf Rebelle Heartbroker Bow, which uses strings, the Nerf Rebelle Crossbow fires more like a blaster gun. The crossbow features an integrated shoulder stock for added comfort. The Nerf Rebelle Crossbow is made with tough, durable plastic, and due to the heft of the weapon, darts can be aimed with precision at the unlucky passerby. It is similar to the recently released Nerf Strongarm, a blaster featuring a six-dart rotating barrel, and the original Nerf Crossbow. Unlike the Nerf Rebelle Heartbreaker Bow, another weapon in the Nerf Rebelle line, the Nerf Rebelle Crossbow can hold up to six darts. With its curved lines and feminine design aesthetic, it’s as deadly as it is beautiful, and thanks to its high-tech mobile app integration, it’s already creating a buzz. The Nerf Rebelle Crossbow, a six-shooting crossbow from Nerf’s upcoming Nerf Rebelle line, is a dangerous pink-and-purple weapon made especially for girls. The transformation I went through helped me see the value of my work with these students in a different way. I am thankful to the hundreds of students who, simply by being themselves and enrolling in classes I was fortunate to teach, were catalysts for my pedagogical and theological self-examination and growth. Wrestling with this shame became a transformative process for me which, eventually, empowered me to affirm the worth of my work by researching a sample course and writing this essay. 1 The " Show and Tell " aspect of the essay follows the personal narrative because my pedagogical reflection arose out of and is inseparable from an intense struggle of many years with adjunct shame. This essay embeds elements of the " Show and Tell " genre regarding a particular world religions survey course within the larger framework of a personal narrative which sketches my adjunct identity and the challenge of teaching large lecture classes of at-risk students enrolled in a state university. – Parker Palmer In their typology of the scholarship of teaching and learning in theology and religion, Killen and Gallagher (2013) identify six genres, two of which are the " Personal/ Confessional/Vocational, " which proceeds from the assumption that " insight comes from reflection on the experience and person of the teacher " (116) and the " Show and Tell, " which " attempts to identify precisely why a particular teaching strategy did or did not work as anticipated " (115). I argue that despite many contextual limitations, the movement toward deepening self-awareness and increasing openness to religious diversity seen in student writing demonstrates that transformative learning began in this course, and that is valuable for students' lives whether or not they are academically successful. Insights from my feminist theological training helped me to affirm the importance of encouraging transformative learning in teaching the academically marginalized and prompted my analysis of student writing in an introductory World Religions course, in order to determine whether or not the course was a site of transformative learning. more This essay describes a transformation in my experience as an adjunct teaching underprepared students from one of shame toward a desire to assert the value of this work.
